What a hooch!

Hooch well the more civilized version would be country liquor is banned and I have never really understood why. Now don’t judge me for having such apparently offensive interests. Posing this question to my parents didn’t help matters either nor did it get me any answers. I have travelled quite a few parts of this country and I have seen hooch being made in almost all corners- in the Santhal Parganas they have something called Mahua, besides Chail River I saw a mini factory sort to make hooch out of fermented rice. In fact I heard a story that a fermented sealed pumpkin was used to play football so that contents inside get mixed well and it would be well, quite a hooch then.
So something that exists and is consumed so rampantly why not make it legal. As I realize from reading the scanty newspaper that I do people often die from country liquor poisoning. So were it to be made legal there could be some bench marks of health and hygiene that it had to pass through so instead of poisoning it would give people a good high. Besides by making it legal our government could earn some tax out of it and I’m sure they could use the money right now. I believe there would still exist the problems of illegal consumption not paying taxes etc but lets look at the silver lining.
I think this banning of country liquor is some sort of colonial hangover (pun not intended with the hangover word) too- instead of trying to grow grapes and apples in an unsuitable climate why do we not celebrate and clink glasses with what we have. Italian and French wines are made from grapes grown in their vines – I doubt the current political atmosphere of Kashmir would permit opening of a distillery there they have grapes apples and every possible fruit, its heaven truly- coming back to my point so we could culture the agricultural products that we do already have.
